I am building a bench out of birch plywood. I was wondering what type of wood I could use as a trim that would stain and be a close match to the birch.
Maple and Poplar are both two potential wood types you can use. They aren’t necessarily the best for outdoor environments but they are similar in color and grain pattern.

Why not just continue with Birch? Other choices would be: Ash, Maple, or Alder.

What type of bench?
Work bench – ash or hard maple, they are more durable
Decorative bench – birch, bass wood, maple, even a good grade of pine
I just built 3 dressers for our bedroom out of birch ply, and trimmed
them out with bass wood. They turned out really nice.
