Where can I buy birch plywood to make my longboard?

Posted by admin on June 15th, 2010 and filed under birch plywood | 1 Comment »

I’ve checked Home Depot already and they don’t sell it.

You can buy brich plywood at Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26rs%3D%26ref_%3Dsr%255Fnr%255Fi%255F0%26keywords%3Dbirch%2520plywood%2520%26qid%3D1264386471%26rh%3Di%253Aaps%252Ck%253Abirch%2520plywood%2520%252Ci%253Atools&tag=digitsy-marina-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

CNC cut puzzle box

This puzzle box is the “Modified Matchbox” – built from plans available online. It takes 10 moves to open and close.

I converted the PDF plans into CNC cutting paths for my router. It was made from 1/4″ (actually 0.235″) baltic birch plywood, with an oak veneer applied, stained and varnished. It’s the first real “thing” that I’ve made with my new router.

I etched some replica “Lament Configuration” style brass panels – very similar to the design used in the Hellraiser movies – and at some point I’ll get them applied to the box.

I think next time I’ll make it from solid oak panels, and engrave a design into the panels using the CNC.

heat vs sanding off bad poly finish?

Posted by admin on June 7th, 2010 and filed under birch plywood | 1 Comment »

have a badly applied poly/stain finish on birch plywood, thing of stripping with heat vs the sandpaper route, any ideas?

I would sand. Sand with fine sandpaper lightly. Check between sandings.

Banjo Friday 23: The completed Yoppjo 3.0 (WOOT!)

Posted by admin on May 31st, 2010 and filed under birch plywood | 19 Comments »

Yep it is Friday again! Today finds me with a completed Yoppjo. Six strings of banjo goodness all wrapped up in maple, oak, wenge, and birch plywood.

It is strung with Martin classical guitar strings at the moment, but I also want to put steel strings on and see how it sounds. Maybe over the weekend … I guess next time I will have to figure a way to put both nylon AND steel and have a way to switch between them..oh man… Thats crazy… Crazy talk.. so how come I just had three different ideas about how to make it work?

ack.

cajon style box drum

Posted by admin on May 11th, 2010 and filed under birch plywood | No Comments »

Raymond is playing the drum he made recently, the top made of red oak and walnut from the Ozarks, the sides of spruce, and the slap face of birch plywood. It’s easy to carry; just grab it by the port where the sound comes out, and it weighs only 15#. Four little feet keep it off the floor to resonate better. It is sprayed with a clear finish to let the gnarly, figured wood grain shine. Bass sounds are closer to the center, while higher pitched bongo type sounds are around the edges. Any side will produce interesting sounds. It’s 20 inches tall, so is a good height to sit on or to use as a table around the house. Take it anywhere rhythm is required. This one is pegged top and bottom for greater strength. http://www.raymondcreasy.com
