Solar Panels for Electricity

Posted by admin on May 31st, 2010 and filed under exterior plywood | No Comments »

http://www.AsYouCanTrust.com/solarpanels

Cut your sheet of plywood to fit the dimensions needed for your array of solar cells.

For an array of 36 solar cells of 3 inch by 6 inch mono-crystalline,

accounting for room in between the cells,

you will need a plywood sheet of 45 inches by 24 ¼ inches by 3/8 inch thick.

Please note that you must use cells of the same size–don’t mix sizes on the same panel.

Using the wood glue and wood screws, mount the 4 strips of ¾ inch by ¾ inch wood along the outer edges of the plywood.

This will provide a shallow panel box for the solar cells.

Drill holes in the bottom rail of the ¾ inch strip for ventilation,

pressure equalization, and to allow moisture to escape.

Holes must be in the bottom rail only.

Run a strip of vent tape over the holes to prevent dust and bugs from entering the panel.

Cut the peg-board to fit within the panel box.

Cut plexiglass to the same dimension as your sheet of plywood.

The plexiglass should rest on top of your ¾-inch railing.

The plexiglass should NOT lay inside of the railing.

For now, set the plexiglass aside for later use.

It will be attached after the solar cells have been constructed.

Paint your panel box and peg-board with exterior latex paint.
This will aid in protection from outdoor weather.

Let paint dry for 24 hours.
Assembling the solar cells

Difference between T1-11 Plywood and exterior plywood ?

Posted by admin on May 30th, 2010 and filed under exterior plywood | 6 Comments »

Need to build a Dog house…..Will 5/8 thickness be good enough and 5 ft W,L and H dog house for Rottweiler ?

T1-11 is exterior plywood that has been textured and dadoed for appearance. So it is a type of exterior, just as pressure treated ply is exterior, but a type.
The grooves are spaced on multiples of 12, being 3,4,6, so a combination will add up to 16", the normal spacing of wall studs.
The texturing is done with a stiff wire brush to raise the grain,
The dadoes are plowed out with a "gang dado
The T1-11 spec is a trademark of weyerhauser corp, denoted Texture- 1-11, similar to the way WD-40 is trademarked (water displacement-40)
5/8 is more than enough for a dog house

Can "rboard" made by atlasroofing be used in place of exterior plywood for residential construction? ?

Posted by admin on May 24th, 2010 and filed under exterior plywood | 2 Comments »

A portion of my home has plywood as an exterior underlayment, and a portion is "rboard," an insulating material that is essentially hardened styrofoam. I can’t see how when used alone rboard is sturdy enough to create structural integrity. Can it be used by itself or must it be used in conjunction with exterior plywood (for dwelling areas)? Please let me know, and thanks!

R board or *insul board is not a good substitute for plywood or o.s.b.
It has little diaphragm properties ( will not hold framing in place when weight is applied downward to the wall ), therefore builders and remodelers use it only on single story homes and then only between the corners.
I suggest you use 1/2" o.s.b for exterior sheating or 7/16" on all projects, it is currently priced to be comparable to R board or not much higher.
R board is a cheap way to cut costs, plus it burns readily.
Some builders always use it in the gable ends and is somewhat detectable because it is not strong enough to pull all framing in line and keep it there, you see lots of wavy siding up in these gables when this R board or insul board is used.
Any diaprahm wall I have ever seen on drawings is plywood or o.s.b. never R board or insul board.

jackhammering & encroachment

Posted by admin on May 22nd, 2010 and filed under exterior plywood | No Comments »

starting early and continuing all day for three days (so far) the construction workers next door jackhammer into the wall abutting our home.
They said they’d leave the section of wall next to our house whole, but they are not only jackhammering columns off of it (to put up braces, they say) but have taken out big chunks of the wall, exposing our exterior wall.
Meanwhile, they demolished the wall running along our backyard, and have built a plywood construction wall in its place – except that the plywood was built into our property, and bows even further in at the middle. It was also built over the top of our big cast iron planter.
Georgetown, Robin Hood Foundation, and Achievement First schools say that they want to be good neighbors, but they’ve been dismissive and dishonest thus far… We shall see.

Superinsulating a Home With Rigid foam

Posted by admin on May 8th, 2010 and filed under exterior plywood | No Comments »

Excerpted from a full page article on installing exterior foam insulation at: http://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/superinsulating-home-rigid-foam

A THICK SKIN THAT KEEPS A HOME WARM AND DRY
Foam sheathing can be your insulation, air barrier, and drainage plane all rolled into one.

Sheathing with foam-board insulation is a great way to get more R-value with a conventionally framed house. It can work just as well in remodeling projects as in new construction. Applying rigid foam takes some getting used to, but the basic tasks are not that much different from installing typical plywood or OSB sheathing—and the lightweight foam is easier on your back…
