Any cheap suggestions for the exterior of a shop?

Posted by admin on March 5th, 2010 and filed under exterior plywood | 1 Comment »

I am building a 12′x16′ shop. Planning on using plywood for the exterior walls, but wondering if there might be something cheaper since wood is so high right now. Is there somewhere I might could get mobile home siding material or something like that? Thanks.

For a cheap siding, those blue tarps or painters plastic. I doubt they will last very long. House siding is probably the most durable for the price. If you think the price of lumber is too high, wait for a while, but I doubt it will get much cheaper. Buy in bulk from a wholesale supply house, not the local lumber yard. But since you only need about 40 pieces including the roof and floor, the wholesale is not a good option. Shop around, ask each supplier for a bid, to include the framing and floor joists. The bigger the prject size, the better the overall price. Make a complete project list and take it to the suppliers, the price should include delivery

I have an exterior porch ceiling that looks pretty rough. Any suggestions on how to smooth it out?

Posted by admin on March 1st, 2010 and filed under exterior plywood | 2 Comments »

I live in Texas and the ceiling isn’t exposed to any of the elements. The ceiling is made of what looks like a plywood. I can see the knots and the rough grain. I would like to repaint the ceiling, but I want to smooth is out first. Any suggestions on what I could do or use that won’t crack?

Thanks

Energy Brace Sheathing vs OSB or Plywood?

Posted by admin on February 27th, 2010 and filed under exterior plywood | 2 Comments »

Any quality builders or contractors out there? What is your opinion of Energy Brace Sheathing vs. OSB or plywood? We discovered in 2006 that our home has no exterior plywood, it simply has "EBS" stapled up over the studs and then vinyl siding is nailed on to the house. Is this standard building industry practice? Years ago homes were built with exterior plywood (5/8 or 3/4" thick), then they went to OSB, now I see some homes being built with what is basically cardboard(??) which is 1/8" thick!!

Does this EBS need anyother layer on top of it like Tyvek or is that it? All that between us and the outside is 1/8" thick carboard, vunyl siding, a coupe inches of insulation and drywall?
Also, I noticed (since the siding was removed) that there is NO energy brace covering the wood plate (beam) that runs bewteen the 1st and 2nd floor. Is this acceptable?

It is called optimum value engineering. Instead of covering the outside of the house with plywood, you brace the walls with boards diagonally at 45 to 60 degrees. Then you cover the outside with rigid foam board. It is a less expensive way to build a house. Unless you are in a high wind region, the walls are more than strong enough if properly braced.

There are a number of other techniques that also go along with such building technique. I’ll bet you also have less wood and more insulation around the windows, and lower heating or cooling bills. It is essentially the greenest type of building.

Either that or you are the latest victim of construction fraud of some company that shouldn’t be in business. If you are concerned about your house falling apart, I suggest you hire a building inspector.

What kind of shape does an exterior wall need to be in before putting in built in book shelves?

Posted by admin on February 23rd, 2010 and filed under exterior plywood | 1 Comment »

The wall is an old lathe and plaster wall that the plaster has come off…about 1 foot X 5" area. Do I need to replaster the wall before I put in the book shelves, or can I put up thin wall board or plywood?

Why don’t you have the cabinet carpenter to build the shelves in his cabinet shop with paint grade plywood applied to the back and you can just put the unit against the wall and secure it with a drill and wood-screws into the wall framing and lath.

If you want the shelves sunk into the wall, then you need to cut out the lath and plaster and build the shelving into the wall. You will need to build a header for support if you remove any wall studs. Get a structural professional to help you with wall studs and framing.

Here are some pictures of a man doing a project in a bathroom with some built-in shelves. You can see the wall studs and you can see the plaster that was pushed through the cracks in the lath on the back of the opposite wall. He used sheetrock to cover the back of his shelvs and hide the back of the opposite wall.

Recommendation for product to remove construction adhesive from exterior brick needed.?

Posted by admin on February 21st, 2010 and filed under exterior plywood | 3 Comments »

My neighbour is removing some large scale "decorative woodwork" from the exterior brick of her home. After removing the plywood underlay she has found large amounts of construction adhesive was applied directly to the exterior brick. She has tried a couple of products to remove it but has only managed to soften it. Any recommendations ?

a 4 inch grinder and a cup wheel with diamond plates.Get the turbo blade, will lessen the damage of the brick.

Toddler in a homebuilt wagon

Posted by admin on February 21st, 2010 and filed under exterior plywood | No Comments »

On a cool April day, our boy takes a ride in the truck/wagon his dad built.

The construction was 2×2 spruce half-lapped and morticed & tenoned into a basic frame. Plywood sheathes the exterior. The window is plexiglass.
