Winning Yachts – MultiPanel – Shower

Posted by admin on March 2nd, 2010 and filed under marine plywood | No Comments »

Multipanel is suitable for interior and exterior marine fitouts.

Applications include bulkheads, wall and ceiling linings, doors, furniture, cabinetry, freezers and fridges, waterproof substrate for flooring and decks, for bathroom and galley benchtops.

Increased strength to weight ratio facilitates higher speeds and reduced fuel consumption, achieving better operating economy and performance.

Super light weight ( up to 70% lighter than marine plywood) and waterproof ( absolutely rot proof) can save thousands of dollars in repairs, material replacement and labour costs.

Compatable with polyester, vinyl and epoxy resins when glass reinforcement is required. IMO fire rated timber veneer finishes also available.

What type of anti-fouling paint should I paint our boat with? Will keep it in sea water year round.?

Posted by admin on March 1st, 2010 and filed under marine plywood | 2 Comments »

Hull is fiberglass over marine plywood. The boat has not been in the water in about 5 years. How soon should we pu the boat in the water after painting with ani-tfouling paint?

We used Trinidad double epoxy copper based bottom paint about 5 years ago.
It’s still in excellent condition. We get the hull cleaned every month.
It runs about $150 to $175 a gallon.

where can i get plans for a plywood boat and what is stitch and glue method for joining the wood?

Why is quarter inch plywood to risky. How bout honeycomb method with quarter inch plywood sandwiched together with honeycomb structure in between. Also where can i get CAD viewer on the net.Can i submit a design to an engineer to test.Is honeycomb a proven method.I would like to make a boat about 12 to 14 feet long for fishing in lakes and able to attach at least a 9.9 outboard motor.
Is fiberglass worth doing and how expensive is this technique.I thought I would use three coats of any kind of primer with three coats of marine paint or concrete (covering) paint on the hull or bottom of the boat.I was going to use brass screws also.I thought about using ribs and incorporate them into the seats to be out of the way. Also the seats would also substitute as storage boxes.I planned on making my own set of oars with three pieces of wood each.I also thought of attaching an upright seat to the bench type wooden seat I was going to install.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!

To start with, get plans. You can contact Small Boat Journal, Messing About in Boats or Wooden Boat for contacts for plans. We know someone who made a boat from luan, 24 feet by 4 feet, a schooner. It was a Phil Bolgers light schooner. It held a 4 man crew and won a race off Fairhaven, CT in the sharpie class. Dynamite Paysen is the name regarding stitch and glue. Use te West system over wood, not fiberglass. Most of Phil Bolgers boats can be built that way.

Will I need a keel to maintain direction if putting an outboard on a 2-surfboards catamaran?

Posted by admin on February 23rd, 2010 and filed under marine plywood | 3 Comments »

I’m building a planing boat by bolting two surboards onto the underside of a piece of marine plywood so that they form a catamaran.
The whole thing will be powered by an outboard motor of 5HP.
Will this start sliding slideways and doing uncontrollable stuff on me if I make turns at speed, or will I be fine?
What do you reckon I need to do to make this handle safely?

Keel would defeat the shallow thinking. No, you want a mid-
length dagger board you can pull up or have hinged so the
vessel can skim over shoals. Even a lee-board to one side
fixed to swing backwards; say, fixed to a spar laid side to side, and fixed by "U" bolts? Either way requires elimination
of the aft surfboard fins because they add drag. Better look
at raising your platform higher (Writer whould junk plywood
for all-bamboo grid), experiment with adhesives in extension footing before bolting, and keep a kayak paddle handy.

How should exterior wooden doors be painted?

Posted by admin on February 21st, 2010 and filed under marine plywood | 1 Comment »

I’m replacing wooden shed doors that will get sunlight and rain. I’m not using the expensive marine plywood so what kind of paint and primer can I use to best ward off the elements from the doors?

A very good quality primer and an exterior paint, both preferably oil based. Fill and sand any crevices in the wood.

homemade sailboat being hauled out of backyard

Posted by admin on February 18th, 2010 and filed under marine plywood | 1 Comment »

This is a 30 foot sailboat I built in my backyard. Its made of marine plywood (9mm) sandwiched with high tensile fiberglass and epoxy on both sides.
It took me 4 years to reach this point.

Want some free advice from a guy you dont know ? Dont build a boat if you have young kids and are rarely ever home. Its not good.
By the grace of God, I finished it this far and my wife still stayed with me.
Just a lot of sanding left, some white marine paint, and 2 floats to make.

For part 2, type in “HOMEMADE SAILBOAT WALKAROUND”

This nice sleek design is the folding trimaran Avalon 9.0 by Ray Kendrick Design PTY. (google his company) from Australia.
