Airsoft Tank Review

Posted by admin on March 5th, 2010 and filed under plywood suppliers | 25 Comments »

This is the tank i built with a Honda Recon ATV, plywood, and other supplies. It is supposed to resemble a M113 but im not made of money so i had to make due with what i had. I used this tank at the Teeth of the Tiger scenario at SC Village. If you have any questions just post them in the comments box. I use a 9.6V in the Thompson to give it a slightly faster rate of fire. I know there is a little video lag i tried to fix it but i couldnt so just dont mind it.

Any one that reads the description will know that at 2:53 theres a noob holding a gun posing. This is an inside joke, its supposed to be a funny subliminal image

SelectPlusTexas Gets Ready for DollyTexas Gets Ready for DollyThe Associated PressResidents along the Texas-Mexico border kept a watchful eye on Tropical Storm Dolly on Monday, stocking up on emergency supplies as forecasters predict the storm will strengthen into a hurricane and make landfall. (July 22)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:road signs with warnings - KSAT]The warnings are clear over this south Texas highway — get ready for some potentially dangerous weather. And locals are doing just that. [Notes:close of plywood - KSAT] Loading up sheets of plywood to protect their homes and prepare for what’s predicted to be Hurricane Dolly.SOT: Frank Surrata, resident: “Last few years, we’ve had a lot of near misses. But that doesn’t mean people are not going to get prepared. Cause we all seen what happened to Katrina and everything else. Better to spend the money now, than spend a lot more later.” [Notes:NOAA video]Early Tuesday, the storm was still at Tropical Storm strength. But even that could mean high winds and up to 20 inches of rain. [Notes:map - AP Graphic] And the National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning from Brownsville to Port O’Connor, with tropical storm warnings for even more of the Texas coast. [Notes:NOAA video]Forecasters predict by the time Dolly gets to land, it will be a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds between 74 and 95 miles an hour. That may happen during the day Tuesday. [Notes:various of storm preps - KSAT] Meanwhile, the governor has activated 1200 National Guard troops and put hundreds of buses on standby in case an evacuation is necessary. And, people who live in the area are getting ready – waiting in long lines to get ahold of plywood, generators, flashlights and batteries. ___ ___, The Associated Press

Extension – the board is constructed!

Posted by admin on February 24th, 2010 and filed under plywood suppliers | 9 Comments »

Went to get my plywood (10mm) and some timber from the local suppliers yesterday, and also some flexitrack. Board is now constructed, and is very firm, with it standing on two legs, makes it firmer! But the flexitrack, to replace the curves from the curved points to the platforms. Took ages to do it, then realising that I was wasting my time. Going to get the remaining curves today, along with some R610s…. operational extension will commence tonight!

Columbia Forest Products produces FSC formaldehyde free panels which are available from Snider Plywood (519 885 5850) in Waterloo ON. I imagine other wood specialty shops would carry their products as well.

How to Build A Solar Space Heater (Part 1) NCSSM, YIKES, and The Forest Foundation

Posted by admin on February 13th, 2010 and filed under plywood suppliers | 6 Comments »

During MiniTerm 2009, students from the North Carolina School of Science and Math built a solar space heater with Dr. Marion Brisk. While doing this, they created a video in the hopes that their efforts could be replicated.

Supplies:
3-2×4x96 pieces wood
1-4X8 piece of plywood
1-4×8 x1 piece of Styrofoam insulation
1-4by4 piece of plexiglass or the equivalent area (less pieces is better though)
1-1×1X96 piece of wood
1-4×8 piece of black sheet metal
Caulking
Paint (Primer and topcoat)
Assorted power tools such as drills and saws.

Procedure:
1.Screw the 2 pieces of 2by4 wood onto the piece of plywood at the edges parallel to each other, 2 side facing up. (See diagram)

2.Cut the last piece of 2by 4 to size, so that it will fit between the 2 pieces that are on the outside of the plywood. Make it as tight of a fit as you can and screw it in the same way (See diagram.)

3.At this point you should have something that resembles a box. The next step is to measure and cut the piece of Styrofoam insulation to fit in the box. Cut it to size (you will end up taking off approximately 3 on 2 adjacent sides, but make sure that it will fit) and then insert it into the box so that it fits snugly.

4.Cut 2 the 1×1 piece of wood to fit on the inside of the box, as flush with what will be the top of the box where the plexiglass goes. Be careful not to make the pieces too high, because if the pieces are too high, they will cause leaks between the plexiglass and the rest of the box. These pieces will be the baffles, allowing for better heating of the air within.

5.Paint all of the wood that you used, including baffles, with a waterproof primer, making sure to fill all crevices so the wood will be protected (the crevices can be filled with spackle before painting, but this is optional). Allow to dry overnight.

6.While the rest of the space heater is drying, cut the sheet metal to size so that it will fit inside of the
box. You will end up cutting off approximately 3 ΒΌ on adjacent sides.

7.When everything has dried insert sheet metal and install the two baffles separating the space heater into 3 equal sections.

8.Caulk the whole structure to make it airtight and cut holes at the top and the bottom to allow for air flow. (You may want to prime the newly exposed wooden surfaces at this point as well.)

9.Paint every wooden surface black. And let dry overnight.

10.Attach the Plexiglass (by screwing it on top, with the screws in fairly close intervals.)

11.Caulk to make airtight again

12.And youre done! Attach couplings to holes and attach to building of choice. Top hole will be for output and bottom hole is for input.

A special thanks to the following students for making this project possible:
