How should exterior wooden doors be painted?

I’m replacing wooden shed doors that will get sunlight and rain. I’m not using the expensive marine plywood so what kind of paint and primer can I use to best ward off the elements from the doors?

A very good quality primer and an exterior paint, both preferably oil based. Fill and sand any crevices in the wood.
