FWW at IWF: DeWalt’s New TrackSaw

Fine Woodworking magazine contributing editor Roland Johnson takes a first-hand look at DeWalt’s new TrackSaw. As Joerg Zellerhoff, Dewalt product manager, explains in this video, the saw delivers table-saw quality and panel-saw capacity in a portable-saw package. It’s an attractively priced tool for someone who doesn’t have a tablesaw but who needs to but large sheets of plywood or MDF.

    question:

how is this expensive system any better than my circular saw, straight edge and clamps?

  2. jasonbiddulph says:

    i would never buy …
i would never buy dewalt again the batteries dont last long and my 2 24volt sds batteries will cost £320 + tax a new drill is £400 plus tax and you get 3 batteries. so there is a con dewalt get better priced and quality batteries, Ryobi is better quality and cheaper

    It may have more …
It may have more features, but you lost the quality with NO riving knife. How many pieces of wood have you messed up because of nasty kickback or binding?

  4. drewbg3333 says:

    You just don’t …
You just don’t understand a quality cut and a quality product backed up with a 3 year warranty on the Festool side. Have you tried either Festool or Dewalt tracksaw’s?

+ for the Dewalt is …
+ for the Dewalt is the anti-reverse feature, prevents kickbacks which will chew up your track ($100-$200 to replace)
    - for the Dewalt is no anti-splinter on the ‘waste’ side which is a bummer since we don’t always have a waste side

Buy the Makita! More feature’s and the price is cheaper as well!

    never knew ryan …
never knew ryan stiles worked for dewalt :)

    anyways.

im currently in 2 minds as to which saw and rail system to buy. i used jigs and clamps in the past but they are a pain to set up and use,eg- measurements from blade egde to jig etc etc.

but, first thing that strikes me about these systems vs straightedge + clamps, is that
the rail system is 100% accurate. using pre cut wood + clamps as a jig isnt. wood breathes and moves and warps. alu doesnt. so which system is best? walt or fes?

Doesnt safety come first? Where’s the safely glasses?????

    Dude, have you ever …
Dude, have you ever used either tool?

The saw and rail system is worth every penny.
You need to try a Festool TS 55 before you buy one at your nearby woodcraft store.

  11. drewbg33 says:

I hate to say it …
I hate to say it but, why buy an imitation when you can get the real deal with Festool. Festool has made the Saw & rail system since 1964. You are going to regret every buying the DeWalt DC351KL and DWS520K

  12. tribalwind says:

    dont see the allure …
dont see the allure, when a simple edge guide jig,a good blade and regular circular saw will produce equal results…?

both the festool and dewalts copy are ridiculously overpriced.

  13. elegrue says:

    Dewalt pretty much …
Dewalt pretty much ripped off Festool for this saw, it cost the same but Festool has a better warrenty. The DeWalt rep didn’t say if you had to change the hair line on a beveled cut or not. The square adaptor is nice though, but it doesn’t come with the saw.
