Hairline cracks in painted plywood walls?

I’ve never painted plywood before – working OK on master bedroom walls – but have vertical hairline cracks in places where sheets of the plywood join together. Some or the cracks are tiny, and others are 4 to 5 feet long. I tried joint compound and sanding, the cracks returned. Advice from painters / carpenters out there?

Yes… crack are a common problem… if you fill with drywall compound and allow to dry for a few days before you paint then you should see a lot less cracks… and what crack you do see can be filled with a detail brush and a little time…

Trouble is, as in a lot of "modern" houses, the walls are not real walls, made of brick, or at least block-work
They are simply non load bearing partition walls, made of bits of timbet and plasterboard.

Timber supports in the "wall" expands and contracts, according to humidity and temperature

So the plaster board tries to give a bit, but eventually cracks.

Despite various products on the market being applied, the only real way around it is to patch up, sell it, and buy a house with real walls.

    Sad, but true,

Wet the wall first. It is sucking the water out of your repair.
